Low-Cost Spay & Neuter

Participate in Moby Kit Rescue's Project Snip Program

Moby Kit Rescue is fiercely committed to reducing homeless and companion animal overpopulation in Southcoast MA through spay and neuter initiatives. Since spaying/neutering an animal can be a costly procedure that is out-of-reach for many families, we have implemented the Project Snip program as a way to make this life-saving surgery available to more people in the community. There are many benefits of spaying/neutering your cat including fewer unwanted litters, a cleaner home, less risk of roaming, more predictable behavior and a reduced risk of cancer and pyometra in females.

What Is Included in Project Snip?

For a flat fee of $150, we will schedule your cat for a spay/neuter surgery through our partner vet and handle all transportation to and from the appointment. Your cat will receive an examination from a licensed veterinarian, as well as the following: sterilization (spay/neuter), rabies vaccine, distemper vaccine, dewormer medication, deflea medication and a microchip.

Who Qualifies for the Program?

  • You must be a resident of Massachusetts (residents of Rhode Island should look into Potter League in Warwick, RI)

  • You must own the cat(s) that you are registering; we cannot accept cats belonging to other rescue organizations

  • Your cat(s) must be between 3 months & 5 years old; cats that are 5 years and older require bloodwork testing (for an additional fee) to ensure that it is safe for them to go under anesthesia.

  • Your cat(s) must weigh at least 3.3 pounds to be sterilized and receive a rabies vaccination

When Is the Next Appointment?

Appointment dates are announced by email one at a time since they depend on our partner vet's availability. If you would like to be notified of upcoming surgery dates, you can click here to sign up for our email list. Please note that this is an email list - not a waiting list - and you are not guaranteed an appointment. Appointment slots are available on a first-come-first-serve basis and typically fill up within 1-2 hours of being announced.

Appointments are almost always on a Sunday and we typically have 5-15 slots available for each surgery date. Owners must be able and willing to transport their cat to our rescue in Fall River at 7am on the day of the appointment, and pick them up approximately 12 hours later. We do not pick cats up from homes, nor can we board your cat overnight.

How Do I Register?

If we announce a date that you would like to register for, you will be required to pay the $150 fee upfront and complete our Project Snip Registration Form to secure your spot. The link to pay and register will be included in the email announcement for each surgery run.

What Does the Surgery Entail?

The sterilization surgery (spay/neuter) is done at a vet’s office under general anesthesia. Your cat will not feel a thing, nor be aware of what’s happening, as it will be asleep throughout the entire process. For male cats, a small incision is made in the testicles and they are removed. The incision is then closed with dissolvable sutures or surgical glue. For female cats, there is a slightly larger incision made to remove the ovaries and uterus, however the recovery time is typically no more than 3-5 days.
